Course Syllabus - Course ComponentsConceptual Design DocumentsThe term "conceptual design" is used for this course rather than "preliminary design" so as to avoid confusion about the activities of the course as the terms are used in the architectural profession. All designs begin in the conceptual stage, but in a project process that requires a formal presentation of a design scheme, when the design requires development into scaled drawings, preliminary design drawings are usually produced. Preliminary design drawings are the "artistic" type of architectural drawing. The focus of this course is on design & construction documentation, so at the end of the conceptual design process, the course moves into design development documentation as a process for refining the project accurately to scale, to prepare the foundation for construction drawings. Other courses in the DTCC Architectural Engineering Technology program focus on the process and drawings of the preliminary design phase. In architectural practice, the types of drawing documentation used in the design phase can vary widely. For the purposes of this course, the drawing types selected were chosen based on the critieria:
