Course Syllabus - Course ComponentsOnline Writing AssignmentsThe purposes of the online writing assignments for the AET 125 course are directly related to the skills required by architectural professionals and the requirements for success in baccalaureate architectural programs. It is essential that a student be able to express their design ideas verbally, as well as graphically using the language of architectural theory, design, and construction. An individual employed as an architectural technician must be able to take verbal instruction from architectural professionals and frame intelligent questions about their work assignments. An architect must be able to discuss design decisions and design choices with the project client in a clear and professional manner. Written documentation is an integral component of internal project record keeping, such as conference memoranda. The construction documents consist of two major components: the drawings and the project manual. The project manual is primarily written contract information including the Instructions to Bidders and the project Specifications. In addition, during the construction phase of a project, voluminous record keeping is required of the project architect, such as Field Reports of site visits and Progress Meeting Reports. The use of the internet as a project management tool is yet in its infancy in the architectural profession. However, in the future it is expected that online communication will become the norm, as reflected in the study proposals of the IIM, integrated information management, conducted by the CSI, Construction Specifications Institute. The use of an "extranet" whereby all project participants, owner, architect, engineer, contractor, communicate via the internet will be used to exchange project information that today is transmitted by telephone, fax, and paper documents. Although students in the AET program have requirements in writing composition, not all students enrolled in the course have completed these requirements or intend to complete the entire program. The writing assignments of this course are intended to provide the student with the training to describe the approach of their design scheme by using selected design concepts, such as architectural style, by requiring a very short verbal description of their knowledge and design decisions. The internet is used as the medium for these assignments to introduce the students to the skills of email communication, attachment of documents, and using the internet as a research and communication tool. The detailed requirements of the online writing assignments are described in:
